Tribond

A red stapler, a lighter and a tin of hard candies, what could these three things possibly have in common.

The Stapler: Red in color and made by Swingline.  (I think that's way too much information already.)

The Lighter: A classic Zippo model 200 with brushed chrome finish.  Preferred by cool non-smoking bank robbers everywhere.

The Candy Tin: サクマ式 ドロップス (In those days Japanese writing went from right to left instead of left to right.) Sakuma Drops have been in production in Japan since 1908.  The tin container has been the same shape from the beginning but the design has changed now and then making them somewhat collectible. This particular version was originally produced in the 1940s .

So there you have it. These three seemingly completely unrelated objects share at least one common trait.  Do you know what it is? As with most trivia the answer is easy if you know it and nearly impossible if you don't.  Duh!  Anyway, give it a go if you like.  I promise to be significantly impressed and to henceforth and forever think even more highly of anyone who can come up with the answer.

The action done by using all three things starts with an 's'. Stapling, smoking, sucking? (just a weak first guess lol)

Nice guess Marlan. Not quite was I was looking for but a good try at least. In the way of a hint, these three things only have this specific tribond in these exact forms. The stapler must be red and made by Swingline, this lighter must be a Zippo in brushed chrome finish and the candies must be Sakuma Drops in that particular tin design. Not that all this will help much but anyway...

Office Space? I don't remember any Japanese candies however.

Ray is on the right track. These items were all prominently featured props in movies. (Three movies, one item from each) The red stapler is indeed from Office Space. The lighter and the candies might be more difficult to figure out.

Ah ha! I figured it out with a little google help. The lighter is from The New Yorker, starring George Clooney, and the Candies were featured in 火垂るの墓. Neither of which I have seen but will be checking out. Sorry if I spoiled the fun.

That's nearly all correct Ray. The lighter is from a George Clooney movie called Out of Sight. It's a lesser know Steven Soderbergh film but it's my favourite of his. It also stars Jennifer Lopez from before her J Lo days. Clooney and Lopez's chemistry is some of the best ever and although I generally don't care for her that much she is great in this. It's got some language and violence but it's a very cool movie.

The Sakuma Drops are from 火垂るの墓 aka Hotaru no Haka aka Grave of the Fireflies. It's a Japanese animated movie but it's defintely not for little kids as it would be to scary for them. Everyone who is old enough should defintely see it.

Well, looks like I was WAY off!! I thought the common trait was "All 3 were bought at a second hand store".

I almost congratulated you on making your first visit to the Bargain Barn here in town......

I haven't seen any of those movies... so can that be my excuse?

Fun post though! I actually have a box of old games that we never play to take and drop off at the Bargain Barn and funny thing, Tribond is one of them. Perhaps I'd better re think that!

Jewel - Yeah I know these were some pretty random objects that don't really have anything in common. I have not yet been to the Bargain Barn but maybe I should check it out sometime.
