Have You Ever Heard Wilhelm Scream?

No? I bet you have, many times in fact. You just don't realize it. I didn't either until a few months ago. Now that I know about it I can't believe I never clued in to the whole thing but now I do know and everything has changed, forever. (Well at least as far as movie screams are concerned.)

I had heard the name "Wilhelm Scream" now and then over the years. Sometimes a movie critic would mention it or I would see it written in a review. I always assumed it was just a type of scream that was popular and many actors learned how to do it or something like that. What I never realized was that it is not just a type of scream, but it is the same scream, screamed by the same person in all of these movies over the years. It is a sound bite, first recorded for a film called Distant Drums in 1951.

Since then it has been inserted into many other movies and in fact become somewhat of a running gag in the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and other franchises. Sort of a sound editor's inside joke if you will.
Here is one of the better compilations I've found.

There was even one in Twilight (New Moon) although we never actually see the person who screams. Can you guess where it was?

So now, even though I'd heard it so many times without knowing it in the past, from now on I'm pretty sure I'll recognize it whenever I hear it.

Oh, and by the way, so will you! Sorry.

Oh my goodness that is so cool!! I would never have picked up on that.

And thanks a lot for the distant drums clip. I don't think I'll ever wade in a lake or river again!

That's cool...I immediately recognized it from Star Wars. Now I have to go look for another sound bite that is quite popular. Picture Goofy doing an instructional video on how to snow ski. His skies slam into the side of the mountain and he falls backwards and out of his boots. The sound he makes next has been used in dozens of movies. It goes something like: "Ahhh hooo hooo hoo hoie." Does that sound familiar. I will see if I can find it.

Thanks for that Ray. I knew what you were talking about before I watched the clip but I didn't know it was used so much. I could be wrong but isn't it also in the animated Disney version of Sleepy Hollow?

Yes I believe it is and I am pretty sure it is in some live action movies too.

That was cool. I would have NEVER got it had I not have read it here! And Ray's clip was pretty fun too!! It has me wanting to buy some of those old cartoons. Do ya think they sell them on DVD?

BTW we are still planning on finding your GeoCache. We just have to wait for John to be home some weekend. I hope you plan on leaving it there for a few weeks atleast.

Tanis - Don't worry, I have no plans to remove it... maybe ever.

That's funny I always thought the original scream was from Star Wars. I can sense the ongoing joke from all those clips by the film makers. It's not like it's just a random scream they've put in but instead it's more like they've saved the Wilhem Scream for last. I thought about the Goofy scream too Ray. Oh and Jewel I'm not sure if Amazon is a common place you shop but if you're looking for classic cartoons on DVD here's an option: http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Cartoon-Favorites-Vol-Starring/dp/B0006J2896/ref=sr_1_3?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1288187833&sr=1-3
This is the Goofy one. Not too bad for around $6. We have a few of the other Disney character plus some Looney Tunes. I still wish Looney tunes came on Saturday mornings.
